let’s go running

January 3, 2012

The holidays are OVER. Sorry, someone had to tell you.

With the new year here, it’s time to put down the Christmas cookies and holiday treats, and get your butt out the door.

Just yesterday, Jess and I revealed our resolutions here and here, however, the majority of you shared that you hoped to get in shape, and run more. Let me be the first to say CONGRATULATIONS! I’m so proud of you!

So, now what?

Whether you are hoping to finally get up off the couch and run a mile, or train for your first long distance race, let me tell you that YOU CAN DO IT. If I can do it, you can do it.

{first race! half marathon in Washington DC with my cousin, Darcy}

I was a non-runner. I hated it. In fact, when I was in high school, I played golf my senior year instead of softball because I was tired of all the running. Yea, that’s how much I hated it. Three half marathons, two full marathons, a handful of shorter distances, and training for Ironman Louisville…I’ve definitely changed my tune.

{my first marathon!}

So, let’s get you up and running! No matter what your skill level, from novice to pro — let’s get you to where you want to be.

As far as training goes, there are TONS of great resources out there to help get you to your desired distance. I have heard so many great things about The Couch to 5K program. I have also used the Living Water Half Marathon and Full Marathon training schedules.

St. Louis has some awesome shops with the gear and experienced knowledge to help keep you moving: Fleet Feet, Missouri Running Company, Big River Running, and Swim Bike Run are just to name a few. I would definitely recommend getting yourself fitted for proper running shoes before you head out for a run. Those five year old Nike Shox aren’t going to do the trick.

For that extra kick, why not sign up for a race? St. Louis and the surrounding areas have lots of races coming up in 2012.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no expert, just a complete fan girl who finds the joy and satisfaction of putting one foot in front of the other. Whether you’re going for your first 5K to your first half or full marathon, the fact that you’re even thinking about competing against yourself for the betterment of your life and health makes me so proud.

Make 2012 your year, and prove to yourself that it’s possible to move your bod. I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.

Keep cravin’ what you love —

    I attempted the Couch to 5k before then abandoned it. I think I need to get back to it and sign up for a 5k. Great job on partaking in so many marathons and competitions!
