a cup of cocoa.

January 20, 2012

It’s no secret that I drink coffee more than I probably drink water, but I stepped away from my personal preference to experience what the city has to offer in the way of hot chocolate. I spent the better half of a day overdosing on the rich, delicious goodness of this sippable chocolate. Below are some of my favorite spots in St. Louis to indulge in the ever-lovely cup of hot cocoa.

{Kakao}

Varieties included milk chocolate, mint chocolate & spicy chocolate, all combined with warm milk. Watching the chocolate making process was an added bonus to stopping in. [2301 S Jefferson Ave]

{Gelateria Tavolini}

This was, by far, my favorite. It was rich and creamy and had a large serving of thick whipped cream atop. Also, how fantastic are those glass mugs? Loved ’em. [1327 Washington Avenue]

{The London Tea Room}

Kudos to the tea room, whose name alone favors other warm drinks, for having a hot chocolate. The foam resting on top of the drink was the best bit. [1520 Washington Ave]

{Rue Lafayette}

Claiming to have the worlds greatest hot chocolate is bold. And while I will not agree entirely with the claim, I will say that if you’re looking for a variety they offer choice of espresso and booze to be added to the chocolatey goodness. [2026 Lafayette Avenue]

{Bissenger’s}

Leave it to a chocolatier to make a cup of cocoa so rich, I couldn’t finish it. It was also my fifth cup of the day, at which point my insides probably held more chocoloate than found in the river at Mr. Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. [32 Maryland Plz]

*I wanted to add Cafe Ciocclato to the list, but they were closed on Saturday (tasting day). I hear their hot chocolate is a.m.a.z.i.n.g.

    You must go to Cafe Cioccolato. They serve their hot chocolate in big mugs and you can slouch into their comfy leather couches. Coincidentally, I was also supposed to go to Cafe Cioccolato on Saturday, but they were closed for a special event. I plan on doing a post about them soon, so stay tuned!
