Monday Morning Musings / 1

June 3, 2013

Farmers Market

It’s a new month (and we’re just 32 days away from TWO YEARS of blogging), so what better time to start a new series on City in a Jar. I spent the month of May commuting around St. Louis via bike and public transit. While it was sometimes difficult, and very wet (I guess May didn’t get the ‘April Showers’ memo), I made it 31 days without my car in a city that is most easily navigated in a vehicle. While spending some mornings riding the bus and metro, I had lots of time to just sit and think. I decided that i’d like to share some of those thoughts with you, here on Monday Morning Musings (forgive that it’s actually the afternoon now) – and to hear yours!

So, let’s get to know each other a little better.

This weekend I went back to my first job – a produce stand. I spent three summers in high school stacking apples and pears, coring pineapples, and knocking on watermelons (did you know the more hollow they sound, the riper they are!). I met some of the BEST people I know – E & S – and learned invaluable lessons – like the best place to hide during a tornado is probably not a walk-in cooler.

Now it’s your turn! Were you a grocery bagger? A pizza maker? A magicians assistant?

What a fun first job! I’ll probably seek your fruits & veggies advice going forward. My first job was at age 14; this also served as my first taste of entrepreneurship. I was owner/manager of My Sister’s Closet. As you know from freelance life, nothing beats being your own boss!

I was a car hop at an old drive-in diner kind of place. I loved it. We had retro car nights and occasionally wore roller skates. Now the place doesn’t exist anymore, and it makes me kind of sad.

You’re back at the fruit stand??? I’ll have to come WALK up to see you, then! & we have a basement nearby in case of tornados everywhere, again… :/

I had loads of jobs. I did paper rounds, I gave extra lessons and all that typical teenage stuff. But the first ‘proper’ job I’ve had was as a kitchenhelp in an amusement park’s restaurant. I loved it and I still help out over summer when I am at home. I really do like it but sometimes it is very annoying having to work weekends and sunny days while everybody else heads to the pool …

Congrats on making it through the month, you’re a braver soul than me! my first job was working in a take-and-bake pizza place in portland, oregon – when i first had money to feed my shopping addiction!

My very first job was whipping up concretes and shakes at good ol’ Ted drewe’s. Making people delicious frozen custard on hot summer afternoons was so much fun, not to mention the steady diet of bananna splits I forced myself on.

    Hi Jess!

I’m Rebecca, and I live in St. Louis, too! I am just getting into biking again (in a commuting/casual/upright sort of way, versus the speed/trails kind that used to feel like the only options). I would love to hear more about your riding experiences, tips, and tricks in St. Louis.

My first job was telemarketing. I worked for 3 days and gave my two weeks’ notice. It was awful! After that, I worked in a pizza restaurant. I made great friends and who doesn’t love pizza?
